We like it when we are acknowledged by the fact of someone remembering our name. We like it when we are thanked, either privately or in a public forum. Being made to feel valued can be more meaningful than a financial reward. Receiving praise doesn’t make us want to give up; rather it makes us want to give even more. Odd, then, that withholding approval, affection and even love is remarkably common. We notice others doing it and disapprove; we don’t see it when we ourselves do the same thing. We can always find a way to justify those occasions when we ourselves hold back.

We withhold that praise for a whole variety of reasons, including embarrassment, fear of rebuff and self-doubt. But we also withhold because we are preoccupied, we are lazy, or because we bear a grudge. Often, we are simply unaware of how much our approval means to others.

List below five individuals who have helped you. Perhaps they were teachers, or came to your aid at a difficult point in your life, or they helped you develop a new skill or confidence. They must all be people whom you did not acknowledge or thank properly at the time.

On the right-hand side of the table, list ideas about how you might still make amends by thanking them now. If they are dead, you could let their relatives know how significant the kindness was for you. It would surely mean a great deal to them to hear.
